World War II veteran Nikolai Bagayev feels he has mocked death twice. This time, however, the enemy was not the German troops invading the Soviet Union, but the coronavirus.
Bagayev, 102 years old, had 80% lung damage when he was admitted with a coronavirus to a hospital in the city of Karaliov, near Moscow, as broadcast by APE-MPE.
After spending more than a month in hospital and a week in the intensive care unit, Bagayev was discharged on Thursday night (July 22).
“The last time I faced death was in 1941. At that time, my right lung was injured during the battle for Moscow. “But I was young then and I was able to recover,” he told Reuters.
“During this time, I had the broad support of doctors despite the fact that many times I found myself on the verge of losing my hope and courage. I feel very grateful to all of them. “
Bagayev is one of the most admired veterans in Russia for their role in the victory over Nazi Germany. In May, he attended the annual Victory Parade in the presence of President Vladimir Putin.
“It was difficult, but I could see the doctors fighting and I helped them,” said Bagayev, who wore his military uniform, which was dominated by medals, when he was discharged from hospital.
“They are the heroes,” Bagayev said, referring to his doctors.
