Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Friday it had hit a military target outside Kiev with cruise missiles and promised more strikes against the Ukrainian capital in response to attacks on Russian targets.
The ministry said its forces had also taken full control of the Ilyich Steel Plant in the besieged port city of Mariupol, which has been besieged by Russian troops for weeks.
Powerful explosions were heard in Kiev on Friday, the most significant since Russian troops withdrew from the area earlier this month in preparation for battles in southern and eastern Ukraine.
The explosions were heard after the Russian Defense Ministry announced that the Moskva, the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, had sunk while being towed after being severely damaged.
Ukraine claimed that the Moskva’s damage was the result of one of its missile strikes, while Russia only spoke of a fire caused by explosive ammunition.
The Defense Ministry said in its statement that its nighttime missile strikes in Kiev had hit a factory on the Ukrainian capital’s border and promised more attacks on the capital.
“The number and scale of missile attacks on targets in Kiev will increase in response to any terrorist attacks or acts of sabotage on Russian territory committed by the nationalist regime in Kiev,” the ministry said in a statement.
