Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday (3) that Russia “wants to destroy the normal life of all Europeans” by completely paralyzing gas transport to the Nord Stream gas pipeline.
“In recent days, Russia is trying to put even more energy pressure on Europe, the Nord Stream gas pipeline has been completely paralyzed. Why are they doing this? Russia wants to destroy the normal life of all Europeans – in all the countries of our continent. [A Rússia] intends to weaken and intimidate all of Europe, all states,” said Zelensky.
Last Friday (2), Russian state energy company Gazprom reported the complete stoppage of gas transport to the Nord Stream 1 pipeline due to an oil leak in the Trent 60 gas compressor at Portovaya station.
Nord Stream 1, which connects Russia to Germany, had its activity suspended since Thursday (1st) due to maintenance. The company has not yet given a return forecast for the gas supply to the pipeline.
For the Ukrainian president, the move is part of a strategy to use “energy weapons”. “Where Russia cannot achieve this by force of arms, it seeks to do so by force through energy weapons. is trying to reach [a Europa] with poverty and political chaos where you still can’t use rockets,” Zelensky said.
According to him, it is necessary for Europe to have “even more unity” to protect itself.
“And to protect ourselves from that, all of us in Europe need even more unity, even more coordination, even more mutual help. This winter, Russia is preparing for a decisive energy strike against all Europeans. And the main responses to that should be two things: first, our unity – unity in defense against a terrorist state, and second, increasing our pressure on Russia – which includes tightening all levels of sanctions and limiting oil and gas revenues. of Russia”, said the Ukrainian president.
“The more blows we deal together, the fewer blows these terrorists will be able to deal with,” added Zelensky.
