Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Tuesday (24) that if the West underestimated Moscow’s determination, it could lead to “tragic and fatal” consequences, as the United States and its allies were facing a great nuclear power.
Ryabkov said the West underestimated “Russia’s readiness to defend itself and secure its own interests in any situation.”
“I don’t even want to assume that this act of underestimation could turn tragic and fatal,” he said, adding that the West had chosen to confront a major nuclear power.
“There are different ways to respond to this — rhetorical and practical. We have the resources to transmit signals to the West in the field of nuclear deterrence, even in the absence of our opponents’ willingness to conduct a sober dialogue. But there is a danger, which cannot be underestimated, that their side will make a mistake. We will try not to.”
