The head of the space agency of Russia says that the new sanctions of the U.S have the potential to “destroy cooperation” in International Space Station. There are currently four NASA astronauts, two Russian cosmonauts and one European astronaut living and working aboard the orbiting outpost.
after the president Joe Biden announced new sanctions on Thursday that “will degrade its (Russia’s) aerospace industry, including its space program,” Roscosmos Director General Dmitry Rogozin said on Twitter that the station’s orbit and location in space are controlled by Russian engines.
“If you block cooperation with us, who will save the International Space Station (ISS) from a runaway orbit and a crash on the United States or… on Europe?” said Rogozin.
“There is also the possibility of a 500-ton structure falling on India and China. Do you want to threaten them with such a prospect? The ISS does not fly over Russia, so all risks are yours. Are you ready for them?”.
a spokesperson for NASA I told CNN which “continues to work with all our international partners, including State Space Corporation Roscosmos, for the ongoing safe operations of the International Space Station.”
“The new export control measures will continue to enable US-Russia civil space cooperation. No changes are planned to the agency’s support for continued operations in orbit and ground stations,” the spokesperson continued.
The ISS, which is a collaboration between the US, Russia, Japan, Canada and the European Space Agency, is divided into two sections – the Russian Orbital Segment and the United States Orbital Segment.
“The Russian segment cannot function without electricity from the American side, and the American side cannot function without the propulsion systems that are on the Russian side,” said former NASA astronaut Garrett Reisman.
“So you can’t make an amicable divorce. You cannot do a conscious decoupling.”
NASA did not respond directly to Rogozin’s observations, but notes that the US space agency “continues to work with Roscosmos and our other international partners in Canada, Europe and Japan to maintain safe and continuous ISS operations.”
But the British prime minister Boris Johnson explicitly questioned the future of the International Space Station as he spoke to the House of Commons plenary on Thursday.
“I have been largely in favor of continuing artistic and scientific collaboration,” Johnson said. “But under the current circumstances, it’s hard to see how even this can go on as normal.”
