Russia will need decades to regain level of democracy, Ukraine says at UN

In a new address to the UN, the Ukrainian ambassador, Sergiy Kyslytsya, highlighted the damage to the lives of its citizens, but also to Russian society, which “will need generations to recover”.

“Putin’s regime has caused serious damage to Russian society, which will need decades to regain the level of democracy achieved in the 1990s,” he said.

Kyslytsya said that “there is no space where Russian troops are welcome”, that Kherson remains under Ukrainian control and that Russia “continues its propaganda of disinformation and political propaganda”.

According to the ambassador, Mariupol is “the clearest example of what is happening”, with civilian casualties that would reach close to 2,200 in the region.

Quoting the statement by the representative of the Secretary-General earlier, Kyslytsya analyzed the conflict: “Two things are clear: The situation continues to deteriorate. And the second is that whatever the outcome, this war will have no winners, only losers.”

“The war is in Ukraine, but the impacts on the whole world, mainly developing countries”, he added, adding that developing countries will be the most affected.

ERRATA: Due to an error in simultaneous translation, it was said that Ukraine would need generations to recover. The Ukrainian ambassador was actually referring to Russian society. The text has been corrected.
