Russia will not participate in the special session of the Human Rights Council for Ukraine

Russia will not take part in a special session of the UN Human Rights Council on “the deteriorating human rights situation in Ukraine,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said today.

“The Russian delegation will not legitimize with its presence this new political show organized in the form of an extraordinary meeting,” Zakharova said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, our arguments and clarifications about the real goals of this special military operation and the real situation on the ground are not taken into account at all,” he said.

“Obviously they will not be heard this time either,” she said, describing the meeting as “a new anti-Russian move by the ‘collective West’.”

The UN Human Rights Council will hold this extraordinary session the day after tomorrow, Thursday, at the request of Kiev, supported by 15 other Council member states, including France, the Gambia, Japan, Mexico and USA and Poland, and by more than 35 observer countries, including Bulgaria, Hungary, Switzerland and Turkey.

This is the first session to be devoted to the issue after the UN General Assembly suspended Russia’s participation in the top body of the international human rights organization in early October.

However, as Moscow provided for the suspension of its participation and resigned from its position as a member of the Human Rights Council, Russia had the right to participate in the work of the Council on Thursday, if it wished, as an observer country.
