Russia will open polling stations for its US presidential election

Polling stations for presidential elections it is expected to open in March Russia at USA. The polls will be set up in three of its diplomatic missions or consulates in the country, the Russian ambassador in Washington announced today, Wednesday (17/1).

The announcement comes as relations between the two countries are at a post-Cold War low due to the conflict in Ukraine.

Russia, which is under a series of Western sanctions over its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, has yet to decide whether to operate polling stations in European countries it considers “hostile”.

Presidential elections in Russia are scheduled to be held on March 17. The president Vladimir Putin, who has led Russia since 2,000, announced his intention to run for a fifth term. He may therefore remain in the Kremlin at least until 2030, when he will be 78 years old. His re-election is considered almost certain in this country where all real opposition has been crushed.

“In the US, we plan to open three polling stations: in our embassy in Washington, as well as in our consulates in New York and Houston,” Russian ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov said today, Wednesday (17/1) in an interview given to publicity from his embassy.

The US is delivering equipment to Ukraine against Russian forces, and Western countries have imposed heavy economic sanctions on Moscow.

Russia, as reported by the Athens News Agency citing AFP, announced last week that it has not yet decided whether to open polling stations in Europe. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova referred to requests to guarantee their safety and clarified that a decision would be made before the end of January.

Thousands of Russians have fled their country, many of them residing in European Union countries, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
