Russian President Vladimir Putin, after ending the telephone conversation With US President Donald Trump on Monday, he said efforts to end the war were on the right track, and that the country is ready to work with Ukraine in a memorandum about a future peace agreement.
Putin thanked Trump for supporting the resumption of direct conversations between Moscow and Kiev, and said Trump noticed Russia’s support to peace, although the key issue was how to advance toward a definitive agreement.
“We agree with the president of the United States that Russia will propose and is ready to work with the Ukrainian side in a memo about a possible future peace agreement,” Putin told reporters near the city of Sóchi, on the Black Sea coast;
“We intend to define a series of positions, such as the principles and moment of a possible peace agreement,” added the Russian President.
Trump also commented on the connection with Putin on the Truth social network, where he said the negotiations “will start immediately”, and said he has already reported other world leaders on the issue, including the Vatican.
As part of this work, Putin commented that the two countries would have to define a possible ceasefire, including their schedule. Ukraine, European allies and the United States asked Putin to accept an immediate and unconditional agreement lasting at least 30 days.
The Russian President added that direct conversations between Russia and Ukraine “give reasons to believe that we are generally on the right track.”
“I would like to note that, in general, Russia’s position is clear. The main thing for us is to eliminate the fundamental causes of this crisis. We only need to determine the most effective ways to move toward peace,” Putin said.
Europe’s position before the possible peace agreement
European leaders say that Putin is not being serious about peace, although they fear that both he and Trump can force a punitive agreement to Kiev, which will leave Ukraine unable to access one fifth of his territory and without a strong guarantee of security against a possible future attack from Russia.
Former US President Joe Biden, the leaders of Western Europe and Ukraine classified the Russian invasion as an appropriation of imperial-style land and repeatedly promised to defeat the Russian forces that could one day attack Otan, an allegation that was denied by Moscow.
Putin presents war as a decisive moment in Moscow’s relations with the West, which, according to him, humiliated Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, expanding NATO and invading what he considers Moscow’s sphere of influence, including Ukraine.
