Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to attend an Indonesia-hosted G20 summit planned for October and November this year, Russia’s ambassador to Jakarta said on Wednesday, following calls from some members for the country to be barred from the group.
“Not just the G20, many organizations are trying to expel Russia… the reaction from the West is absolutely disproportionate,” Ambassador Lyudmila Vorobieva told a news conference.
The United States and its Western allies are weighing whether Russia should remain among the world’s top economies after the invasion of Ukraine, sources involved in the discussions told Reuters.
The likelihood that any attempt to exclude Russia will be vetoed by other members of the club – which includes China, India, Saudi Arabia and others – has raised the prospect of some countries skipping G20 meetings this year, the sources said.
Russia is facing an onslaught of international sanctions led by Western nations aimed at isolating it from the global economy, including mainly blocking it from the SWIFT global banking system and restricting its central bank trading.
“There have been discussions about whether it is appropriate for Russia to be part of the G20,” said one source. “If Russia remains a member, it will become a less useful organization.”
