As the Russian invasion of Ukraine approaches its 11th month, U.S. and Ukrainian officials told the CNN that Russia’s artillery power has dropped dramatically since the peak of the war, in some places as much as 75%.
US and Ukrainian authorities still don’t have a clear explanation. Russia could be rationing artillery ammunition due to low supplies, or it could be part of a broader reassessment of tactics in the face of successful Ukrainian offensives.
Either way, the stunning decline in artillery is further evidence of Russia’s increasingly weak position on the battlefield nearly a year after the invasion, U.S. and Ukrainian officials told the CNN .
This comes as Ukraine is enjoying increased military support from its western allies, with the US and Germany announcing last week that they will supply Ukrainian forces with armored fighting vehicles for the first time, as well as another shipment of Patriot Defense missiles that will help protect the Ukrainian skies.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is apparently escalating to bolster domestic political support, US intelligence officials believe, for a war he initially described as just a limited “special military operation”.
