Russia carried out two attacks against Ukrainian territory on Thursday (8), leaving at least 17 wounded in two different regions of Ukraine. One of the actions took place in Kherson, in the region hit by the flood caused by the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam.
Russian shelling wounded at least nine people in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson as residents were evacuated due to flooding caused by the dam’s destruction, Ukraine’s Interior Ministry said.
The attorney general’s office initially claimed that one person had been killed by Russian bombing, but later said that no deaths had been reported.
In a statement on Telegram, the Interior Ministry said the bombing began “precisely during the evacuation of citizens whose homes were flooded”.
The ministry reiterated accusations that Russia abandoned people in occupied territory in the Kherson region, adding: “And it continues to prevent Ukraine from saving the most valuable thing – human lives.”
The attorney general’s office said it had opened a war crimes investigation and that four other people were wounded in a nearby village.
A Reuters reporter in Kherson said he could hear what sounded like artillery fire. Russia, which began its full-scale invasion in February 2022, has denied targeting civilians, although it has bombed cities across Ukraine.
Kherson is in the Dnipro, about 60 km downstream from the Kakhovka dam.
Attack on Cherkasy
Two missiles hit sites near the city of Uman in central Ukraine on Thursday, injuring eight people, the regional governor said.
Ihor Taburets, governor of the Cherkasy region, wrote on the Telegram messaging app that the missiles hit an industrial site and a car wash at night. He said two of those injured were seriously injured, according to preliminary information.
Photos posted on his Telegram channel showed emergency crews combing through sites largely reduced to rubble, with smoke billowing in the background.
The attacks took place during air strike alerts announced across Ukraine for about an hour in the middle of the night.
The report could not independently verify the accounts.
A missile attack in April on an apartment building in Uman killed 23 residents, in the first such attack in several weeks.
