Russian missiles hit the city of Sumy, in northeastern Ukraine while people gathered for services this Sunday (13), killing at least 32 people local authorities said.
At least 84 people including ten children, they were also injured in the attack, according to the region’s prosecutor.
“Many people were killed today as a result of the missile attack,” he said Artem Kobzar Mayor of Sumy, confirming the death toll.
Last week, an attack with Russian missile killed 20 people in central city of Kryvyi Rih.
Zelensky said the deadly attacks on Sumy were carried out by ballistic missiles and asked for a “strong response from the world” in a statement.
“Russia wants exactly this kind of terror and is extending this war,” he said. “Without pressure on the aggressor, peace is impossible. Conversations have never prevented ballistic missiles and bombs. We need to treat Russia as a terrorist deserves it.”
The attacks hit the city center on Ramos Sunday, while residents participated in religious cults.
Two ballistic missiles were fired by Russia against the city center, said Volodymyr artyukh Head of Military Administration in the region. “At that moment, there were a lot of people on the street,” he said.
Russia has intensified the air attacks and missiles against the Sumy region in recent weeks, expelling the Ukrainian forces from much of Kursk’s adjacent Russian territory. His forces also occupied some minor settlements within the Sumy region.
Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s head of foreign policy, called the attack of a “horrible example of Russia intensifying attacks while Ukraine accepted an unconditional ceasefire.” French President Emmanuel Macron also reacted by saying that “strong measures” are necessary to impose a ceasefire.
UNU Humanitarian coordinator to Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, condemned the attack “in the strongest possible terms” and noted that international humanitarian law “prohibits strictly attacks against civilians and civil infrastructure.”
