Russian forces bombed the city of Kharkiv, the regional military governor said on Friday, amid continued heavy fighting in eastern Ukraine.
“In the last 24 hours, Russian occupying forces fired 48 rounds with artillery, mortars, tanks and several rocket launchers at Saltivka, Piatyhatky, Oleksiivka, Derhachi and the city center,” said Oleh Syniehubov, head of the regional military administration of Kharkiv on Telegram. “So far, there are 15 wounded in Kharkiv and the district.”
Syniehubov said the bombing had seriously damaged a pipeline and that emergency crews were working at the scene.
The bombing of Kharkiv comes amid intense fighting in the southern part of the region.
Ukrainian authorities urged civilians to evacuate several cities and settlements in eastern Ukraine. “The fight continues towards Izium,” he said. “We continue the evacuation, in particular of Barvinkove and Lozova.”
Recent advances by Russian forces around Kharkiv may be setting the stage for the eastern city of Sloviansk to become the next target of Russia’s offensive, according to the Institute for the Study of War, a think tank based in Washington.
