The traffic police counted all the cars in Russia. At the end of 2021, the country’s vehicle fleet increased by 2% compared to 2020.
As of the end of last year, there were 64 million cars in Russia. 50.3 million of them are cars, 6.6 million are trucks, and the remaining 843 thousand are buses. At the same time, the number of new environmentally friendly cars is growing in the country. Thus, 13.2 million cars on Russian roads are equipped with Euro-5 engines, which is 11.5% more than a year earlier. Another 281 thousand cars are equipped with Euro-6 engines, which is three times more than in 2020.
The country’s car fleet is gradually being updated. So, last year the number of new cars (up to a year) reached 8.29 million, which is 18% more than in 2020. But the number of old cars (older than 15 years), on the contrary, decreased by 2.6% to 20 million.
The number of hybrid and electric cars in the country is also increasing. There are now 90,000 hybrids in Russia, which is three times more than in 2020. And the number of electric vehicles in the country for the year increased by 70% to 14.7 thousand. Porsche Taycan became the most popular “green” transport among Russians. The second most popular electric car is Tesla’s Model 3. Also in the top five most popular electric vehicles are the Audi e-tron, Tesla Model Y and Nissan Leaf.
The region with the largest number of cars remains Moscow and the region. 4.95 million cars are registered in the capital. Another 3.56 million are in the region. There are 2.42 million cars in the Krasnodar Territory. 2.3 million cars drive on the roads of Yekaterinburg and the region, and in St. Petersburg, according to the traffic police, there are 2.28 million vehicles.
By the way, analysts interviewed by Kommersant journalists are pessimistic about the prospects of the domestic car market. This year, according to their forecasts, the increase in the fleet, if any, will be minimal, since sales of new cars will fall by 50-70%.
