Russian citizen confessed to attempting to bribe Tesla employee for BTC

A Russian citizen pleaded guilty to conspiracy to hack into the computer network of a Tesla factory in Nevada, whose employee he tried to bribe at BTC to spread the ransomware virus.

According to a statement from the US Department of Justice, Russian citizen Yegor Kryuchkov pleaded guilty to conspiracy to involve a company employee in Nevada in a scheme to introduce malicious software into the company’s computer network. Although the name of the company was not disclosed in the documents of the Ministry of Justice, it was revealed last summer that Kryuchkov was arrested for offering a Tesla electric car factory employee $ 1 million in bitcoins for installing a virus on a work computer.

According to the Justice Department, the defendant made several trips from California to Nevada in August 2020 to persuade a company employee to cooperate with a criminal conspiracy before the employee reported it to his employer, who notified the FBI.

“A quick response from the company and the FBI prevented a major theft of company data and allowed the deployment of the extortion scheme to stop in the bud,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Nicholas McQuaid of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “This case underscores the importance of companies approaching law enforcement immediately in such cases.”

Kryuchkov offered a company employee a bribe in bitcoins for distributing malware on the company’s computer network. After installing the virus, Kryuchkov and his accomplices wanted to use it to steal data, and then planned to demand a ransom and threaten to publish confidential information.

Kryuchkov pleaded guilty to conspiracy to intentionally damage a protected computer network. The verdict in the case will be delivered by the court on May 10.
