Russian commander is testing Putin’s tolerance of failure in Ukraine: UK

Chief of the Russian General Staff (CGS) Valery Gerasimov – who became President Vladimir Putin’s general commander for President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine on Jan. UK Ministry of Defense this Saturday (1st).

“Gerasimov’s tenure was characterized by an effort to launch a general winter offensive aimed at extending Russian control over the entire Donbass region.

Eighty days later, it is increasingly evident that this project has failed,” the defense ministry said in a statement.

“On several axes on the Donbass front, Russian forces made only marginal gains at the cost of tens of thousands of casualties, largely squandering their temporary advantage in personnel gained from the autumn ‘partial mobilization’,” the institution continued.

“After 10 years as CGS, there is a realistic possibility that Gerasimov is pushing the boundaries of the extent to which Russia’s political leadership will tolerate failure,” he added.

Gerasimov was the fourth commanding general appointed by Putin to oversee the campaign in Ukraine since the start of the war.

Retired Lieutenant General Mark Hertling called the 67-year-old general’s appointment “bizarre”, telling the CNN on the day of the announcement: “It is troubling to me and confusing to me why Mr. Putin did this other than potentially to place blame on Gerasimov, who is considered an insider in the Kremlin.”

Russian forces have suffered steep losses in the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut and made only incremental gains, Ukrainian officials said earlier this week.

Russia has struggled to capture the city and achieve a rare, if symbolic, victory.

After failing to make gains in other parts of the country, Moscow has been focusing its efforts on the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.
