Russia’s Ministry of Defense said on Saturday (24) in a statement addressed to Wagner Group mercenaries that they were “deceived and drawn into a criminal adventure” by Wagner’s boss Yevgeny Prigozhin.
In a note published on Telegram, the ministry asked the fighters to get in touch with their representatives and those of the security forces, and promised to guarantee their safety.
Earlier, Prigozhin accused the Russian military leadership of attacking one of his military camps and killing a “large amount” of his mercenary forces. Then he promised to attack official Russian forces as a reprisal.
Prigozhin claimed that the Russian Ministry of Defense misled the Wagner Group and promised to “respond to these atrocities”.
“They sneakily tricked us, trying to deprive us of the opportunity to defend our homes and instead hunt down Wagner. We were ready to reach an agreement with the Ministry of Defense to hand over our weapons and find a solution for us to continue to defend the country. But these scoundrels have not calmed down,” Prigozhin exposed in a voice note posted on Telegram.
He even promises retaliation: “Many tens, tens of thousands of lives of Russian soldiers will be punished,” declared Prigozhin. “I ask that no one put up resistance. Those who show such resistance, we will consider it a threat and destroy them immediately. This includes any roadblocks in our path, any aircraft seen over our heads.”
It was also requested by the mercenary that all people stay at home and “keep calm, so as not to be provoked”.
Then Russia’s top commander in Ukraine, Sergey Surovikin, ordered the mercenaries to stop the rebellion and obey President Vladimir Putin.
