The adviser to the Russian permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, Boris Bodarev, has resigned as he opposes the war in Ukraine. He announced his decision on his Facebook page, in which he wrote: “In the twenty years of my diplomatic career, I have seen various turns in our foreign policy, but I have never felt such shame for my country as on the 24th of February this year.” .
“The offensive waged by (Russian President Vladimir Putin) Putin against Ukraine, but in fact against the whole Western world, is not only a crime against the Ukrainian people, but I would say a heinous crime against the people of Russia, which with the “A bold letter Z erased all hopes and prospects for a prosperous and free society in our country,” he wrote in his post.
Bodarev points out that one of the goals of those who unleashed the war is to stay in power forever, on the altar of which they are willing to sacrifice as many lives as it takes. “Thousands of Russians and Ukrainians have already been killed,” he said.
“Unfortunately, I have to point out that over the past twenty years, the level of lies and pseudo-professionalism in the Foreign Ministry has been steadily rising. However, in recent years this has become disastrous,” Bodarev said.
According to him, “the best illustration of the decline of this system” was the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov. “In 18 years he has gone from being a professional and educated intellectual, so valued by my colleagues, to a man who constantly makes contradictory statements and threatens the world (including Russia as well) with nuclear weapons,” Bodarev said.
Today, the Russian Foreign Ministry does not deal with diplomacy, Bodarev points out. “It all comes down to incitement to war, to lies, to hatred. This serves the interests of a few, very few people, who in this way contribute to the further isolation and decline of my country.”
Bodarev adds that he has been a diplomat for twenty years and that the Foreign Ministry was for him “his home and his family”. “But I just can no longer participate in this bloody, meaningless and completely unnecessary shame,” he concluded in his statement.
Bodarev is probably the first Russian diplomat to announce his resignation over the war in Ukraine. The Russian Foreign Ministry has not yet commented on his resignation.
In March, diplomats from dozens of European countries walked out of the UN Human Rights Council as Lavrov’s speech at the disarmament conference was broadcast.
