Russian drones inflicted significant damage on energy infrastructure in the northern Ukrainian city of Konotop in a nighttime attack that injured at least 14 people and cut off electricity to the settlement, local authorities said on Thursday (12).
Video released by Ukraine’s Emergency Service showed rescuers and firefighters working at the scene of a burning building. Reuters was able to confirm the location of the building’s facade, lamppost and windows that matched satellite imagery and street footage. The date could not be verified.
Rescue teams were working to restore power to the city, which had a pre-war population of about 83,000. Regional authorities said there were 10 explosions during the attack and Major Artem Semenikhin said the power system was in critical condition.
Konotop is in the Sumy region, which has been particularly targeted by Russia in recent weeks after Ukraine used the area as a staging ground for a surprise incursion into Russia last month.
The Konotop strike was part of a broader Russian strike using 64 drones, the air force said. The military also said it shot down 44 of them in nine different regions.
Such attacks have become a regular occurrence, often at night, since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
Semenikhin said authorities in Konotop did not know when power would be restored and planned to provide water on an hourly basis.
The attack also damaged seven residential buildings, medical and educational institutions, a store, a bank and a section of the city’s tram line, regional prosecutors and local authorities said.
