In an interview with CNN This Wednesday (23), Gustavo Blum, professor of Politics and International Security and researcher of International Relations, said that Russia’s “bet” in recognizing the independence of two separatist areas of Ukraine was that the sanctions that could be imposed would not be so different from those that the country has suffered since 2014.
Blum explains that, since that year, the Russian economy has already suffered from sanctions due to the annexation of Crimea and that it is already “used to live” this way.
“Russia has been a sanctioned economy since 2014,” he said. “She is already getting used to living, one way or another, with these limitations,” she added.
According to the professor, the main difference now is that some countries are now also trying to target Russian lawmakers, for example by limiting the movement of money by Russian parliamentarians in the UK.
In the last two days, several countries and blocs have announced sanctions against Russia, such as the European Union and the United States.
The researcher says that we have observed the “materialization of tension between Russia and Ukraine” and that the Ukrainian chancellor’s speech at the UN General Assembly this Wednesday is important because NATO, for example, would not be obliged to intervene immediately in an armed conflict.
“We are discussing the most basic things about the international system, that is, who can recognize the independence of whom,” he said.
Finally, regarding the expectation of Brazil’s speech at the General Assembly, Blum evaluated that the country should maintain a more “conservative posture, resuming multilateralism” and territorial integrity.

understand the conflict
After months of military escalation and intemperance on the Ukrainian border, Russia is increasing pressure on its former Soviet neighbor, threatening to destabilize Europe and involve the United States.
Russia has been tightening its military grip around Ukraine for the past year, amassing tens of thousands of troops, equipment and artillery at the country’s gates. The mobilization prompted warnings from US intelligence officials that a Russian invasion could be imminent.
In recent weeks, diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions have not come to a conclusion. The independence of Donetsk and Luhansk, two Ukrainian separatist areas, was recognized by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday (21).
The escalation in the years-long conflict between Russia and Ukraine has set off the continent’s biggest security crisis since the Cold War, raising the specter of a dangerous confrontation between Western powers and Moscow.
