Russian electronics manufacturers set the task to enter the world top 5

A few days ago, on February 12, Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, put forward a proposal to ensure the country’s complete independence from foreign electronic products by 2030, the RBC news outlet reported, citing its sources. According to the deputy chairman of the government, for a long time the country actively invested resources primarily in electronics related to the defense sector, while the civilian sector of technology was “given away without a fight” to foreign manufacturers. This led the country to lag behind the world leaders for several years, but now the situation is likely to change.

The official said that by 2030 the leading Russian companies that produce various equipment should enter the top 5 electronics manufacturers in the world market. At the same time, which is important, we are not talking about the need to copy any product for local production, but about creating something new, our own. In connection with the new proposal, the official put forward a list of requirements for Russian manufacturers, which is highly desirable to be completed by the end of 2030. For example, he said that Russian companies should lead the domestic market, pushing foreign competitors to second positions.

The statement also states that in the production of electronics, Russian brands should use domestic components and consumables, and the volume of exports should exceed the total sales in the local market. And, most importantly, Dmitry Chernyshenko believes that by the end of this decade, the share of the Russian electronics industry in total GDP should grow exactly three times (2.2% as of 2020). The plans, without any doubt, are very ambitious, but the deadlines for their implementation are quite impressive – there are still eight years until the end of 2030.

It is worth noting that earlier officials, discussing the need for import substitution, spoke only about products that are used in defense enterprises, are used in government agencies or work with critical information infrastructure. Now the situation has changed – Yuri Borisov said that import substitution should be expanded to the civilian sector of electronics due to the increasing statements about possible sanctions on the supply of this or that equipment – this is an opportunity to level the dependence of the local market on external influences.
