The Voentelecom operator has begun testing new, so-called “trusted” SIM-cards that use Russian cryptography. This was reported by the RBC edition with reference to one of the project participants – the IDX company, which acted as a developer of identification services.
At the moment we are talking about “several hundred SIM-cards”. The experiment will end at the end of 2021. As a result, the project can be expanded. It is noted that with the development of fifth generation 5G cellular networks, the transition to such SIM cards may become mandatory for all Russian operators.
IDX CEO Svetlana Belova noted that Voentelecom is the first operator to start the test, and also the first to use a hardware security module on its network, bringing the services of its virtual mobile operator (MVNO) to the required security class.
Svetlana Belova explained:
For various Russian payment applications such as SberPay, TinkoffPay, etc. foreign mobile operating systems – both iOS and Android are untrusted environments, neither the FSB nor the bank can vouch for operations in them. We don’t know what bookmarks are there. Using a trusted SIM card to store your billing information solves this problem. We can be sure that this data is invulnerable to external or internal attacks. ”
