Russian energy giant Gazprom stops sending gas via pipeline via Poland

Gazprom, a Russian state-owned energy giant, has said it will stop sending Russian gas through the “Yamal” pipeline, which runs through Poland. The move comes after the Kremlin imposed sanctions on several foreign companies.

The company said the sanctions included EuRoPol Gaz, which owns the Polish section of the pipeline.

“A ban on transactions and payments in favor of persons under sanctions has been established, in particular for Gazprom, this means a ban on the use of a gas pipeline owned by EuRoPol Gaz to transport Russian gas through Poland,” said a representative of the company. Gazprom.

This is the latest tension over gas sent from Russia to Poland. Last month, Gazprom said it had completely stopped supplies to Polish gas company PGNiG and Bulgaria’s Bulgargaz after they refused to heed a demand from Moscow to pay in rubles rather than euros or dollars.

The Yamal pipeline runs from Russia, through Belarus, to Poland and Germany. According to energy analyst firm Bruegel, it accounts for a small part of the flow of Russian gas to Europe, and its use has declined sharply since the start of the war with Ukraine.

The German energy regulator played down the impact on its supplies. He told Reuters in a statement that stopping the flow of gas through the Yamal will not jeopardize German supplies because “almost no gas to Germany has been passing through this pipeline for weeks”.
