Russian forces opened fire on the Ukrainian city of Energodar, close to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant., said an adviser to the Ministry of Interior of Ukraine, Anton Herashchenko. He spoke of the attacks in online postings on Thursday.
Herashchenko said Russian troops were stepping up efforts to take control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine. Local workers live in the nearby town of Energodar.
Last week, Russia took over the decommissioned Chernobyl plant, about 100 kilometers north of Ukraine’s capital Kiev. On Wednesday, hundreds of workers and residents blocked an access road to a Ukrainian nuclear power plant near Enerhodar as Russian forces advanced in the area.
Videos posted on a Facebook profile of the local authority showed a large crowd carrying Ukrainian flags blocking the road on Wednesday morning. Garbage trucks were also being used to block the road.
“We convey the position of our city and its residents that the ZNPP [Central Nuclear de Zaporizhzhia] is under reliable protection, that its workers and residents are under Ukrainian flags,” said Dmytro Orlov, mayor of Enerhodar, on Facebook.
On Tuesday (1), Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi had already reported that Russian military forces had taken control of the territory around the plant.
