Russia’s Defense Ministry on Sunday confirmed an attack on an oil refinery and fuel storage facilities in the Ukrainian port city of Odessa, which has largely been spared the full brunt of Russian attacks since the invasion began.
“This morning, high-precision sea and air missiles destroyed an oil refinery and three storage facilities for fuel and lubricants near the city of Odessa, from where fuel was being supplied to the group of Ukrainian troops in the direction of Mykolaiv,” he said in a statement. communicated on Telegram.
Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov said the attack left no casualties. “Today the occupiers hit critical infrastructure sites in Odessa with missiles,” Trukhanov said in a televised address. “Fortunately, there are no casualties. Only buildings are damaged. The situation is now under control.”
The mayor also speculated that Russia could deploy a contingent of troops stationed in Transnistria – a breakaway republic in neighboring Moldova – echoing concerns raised by Ukrainian officials.
“Of course, at some point, sooner or later, they will use them,” he said. “It’s hard to say in which direction, but there is a threat. (The Armed Forces of Ukraine) know this and are working.”
