Ramzan Kadyrov, the powerful head of the Russian republic of Chechnya, said early on Monday that there would be an offensive by Russian forces not only in the besieged port of Mariupol, but also in Kiev and other Ukrainian cities.
“There will be an offensive not only in Mariupol, but also in other places, cities and villages,” Kadyrov said in a video posted on his Telegram channel.
“Luhansk and Donetsk – we will totally liberate first, and then take Kiev and all the other cities.”
Kadyrov, who has often described himself as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “foot soldier”, said there should be no doubts about Kiev.
“I guarantee: no step backwards will be taken,” said Kadyrov.
The Chechen has been accused more than once by the United States and the European Union of violating his rights, which he denies.
Moscow fought two wars with separatists in Chechnya, a mostly Muslim region in southern Russia, after the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991. But it has since poured huge sums of money into the region to rebuild it and given Kadyrov great autonomy.
The Kremlin describes its actions in Ukraine as a “special operation” to demilitarize and “denazify” its neighbour. On Sunday (10) Russia intensified its attacks in eastern Ukraine.
