Russia’s Foreign Ministry has rejected a proposal by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to demilitarize the area around the Zaporizhia nuclear plant in Ukraine, Reuters reports.
In briefing the journalists, the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Ivan Nechaev stated that these proposals are unacceptable.
The Russian army has been controlling the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant since March. The facility is very close to the front lines of the war and has come under fire several times in recent weeks, sparking fears of a global nuclear disaster. The two sides blame each other for the shelling in the area.
Recently, Mr the UN’s chief nuclear official warned that the nuclear plant “is completely out of control” and made an urgent appeal to Russia and Ukraine to immediately allow experts to visit the sprawling complex to stabilize the situation.
