Russian Foreign Ministry: Sweden-Finland accession to NATO will yield Russian response

Russia has put new issues on the table as part of its security concerns.

“Sweden and Finland joining NATO will bring a Russian response,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday at noon.

As for the forthcoming contacts with Ukraine, the Russian Foreign Minister stated that “we know how to separate emotions from professionalism”.

“It is important that Kiev, under the influence of the West, refrains from playing hard and lying about possible Russian-Ukrainian talks,” the statement said.

It is recalled that, since the end of the Cold War, Sweden and Finland had not joined NATO, unlike Norway, while Helsinki in particular had provided guarantees of security and neutrality in its foreign policy to the then Soviet Union, a process by which the term “Finnishization” also comes from.

Yesterday, the leaders of the two countries reiterated that they intend to stay out of NATO, despite the “shock” of the Russian invasion.

However, the two countries were invited to attend the Alliance meeting today, which may have sparked a backlash from Moscow.
