The Kremlin declined to comment on the US government’s assertion that the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un should meet with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin in Russia, to advance the arms negotiations between the two countries.
“We have nothing to say on the matter,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.
The US National Security Council warned on Monday that weapons talks between Moscow and Pyongyang are “actively advancing” .
“We have information that Kim Jong Un expects these discussions to continue, including diplomatic engagement at the level of leaders in Russia,” council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement.
The New York Times first reported on the potential meeting between Kim and Putin in Russia, saying it would take place this month.
In July, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu visited North Korea “to try to convince Pyongyang to sell artillery munitions to Russia,” Watson added.
“We call on North Korea to cease its arms talks with Russia and to fulfill the public commitments Pyongyang has made not to supply or sell weapons to Russia.”
Since the trip in July, another group of Russian officials have traveled to Pyongyang for follow-up discussions, US National Security Council strategic communications coordinator John Kirby said last week.
Putin and Kim also exchanged letters pledging to increase their bilateral cooperation, he added.
A CNN asked the Russian embassy in Washington for comment.
