Russian hackers have targeted Ukraine’s electricity grid

Ukraine announced on Tuesday that it had thwarted an attempt by Russian hackers last week to damage its electricity grid with a cyber attack: “This is a military hacking group,” said government spokesman Victor Zora. “Their goal was to shut down a number of facilities, including electricity substations. They did not succeed and we are investigating,” he said.

Kyiv has denied the allegations in a statement issued Friday stating “Similar, baseless allegations concerning Russia’s intelligence have been made more than once. The attack was most likely carried out to support Russian military activities in eastern Ukraine, Zora said.

The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-UA) said in a statement that the hackers had targeted computers that controlled high-voltage substations in Ukraine owned by an energy company, which CERT-UA did not name.

The hackers struck in two waves, first, endangering the electricity grid in February, before the second attack, which included a plan to close substations and cause damage to infrastructure last Friday night, the team said. .

Ukraine managed to prevent the attack and there was no damage to the grid.
