Russian microchip design centers have found a new task: they will produce chips for cars

Today, February 13, the Kommersant news outlet, citing its sources, reported that Russian design centers that are responsible for developing domestic chips are planning to transform them to perform tasks related to the automotive sector. At the moment, no one has made a final decision yet, but experts believe that with such innovations, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will be able to kill two birds with one stone – to save design centers from inevitable death against the backdrop of sanctions bans on the production of microchips at foreign production facilities and the Russian automotive industry, suffering from microchip deficiency.

The fact is that at the moment the Russian automotive industry is really experiencing the problem of an impressive shortage of microchips due to sanctions and global problems in this segment. Accordingly, domestic car manufacturers cannot sell the required number of vehicles even taking into account the supply of necessary components from China, and the government is now actively discussing how to solve this problem by implementing the process of developing and manufacturing all the necessary electronic components locally in Russia.

We are talking not only about microchips that are needed for a multimedia system, various driving assistants and other vehicle electronics, but also about the sensors themselves, controllers, control systems and much more. In the event that the necessary list of modern electronics is decided to be produced in the country, and this is one of the most likely scenarios, design centers will need to re-profile in a new direction for themselves, satisfying the vast needs of the automotive industry. At the same time, the source of the publication clarified that it takes a lot of time to certify each component in the car, so the current plans are long-term.

However, Russia already has everything necessary for the production and implementation of the plans. Design centers that were engaged in the design of Russian processors, after the imposition of sanctions, do not have the opportunity to produce chips at foreign production facilities, gaining access to the latest technological processes, but this is not necessary. Experts said that in order to meet the demands of the Russian automotive industry, production lines with a technological process of 90 nanometers are needed – these technologies have already been mastered in the country and factories will be able to start the process of producing chips as early as 2024.
