Russian military trucks form convoys with plates facing backwards

German journalist Frederik Pleitgen, from CNN International, witnessed what he describes as a “very threatening movement” in Russia, near northeastern Ukraine, early on Thursday.

“We saw… military trucks, which actually had their plates reversed. They flipped the plates, which could be them trying to mask some kind of movement,” Pleitgen told CNN.

“The Russian military really is in a position where it certainly looks like they could strike at any moment,” he added.

Meanwhile, further south, near Donetsk, Pleitgen noticed other examples of Russian military personnel gathered.

“You see a lot of Russian convoys that seem to be forming there,” he said. “[Não está] clear whether or not they have already crossed the border, the way all this can happen is you can have two areas where the Russians can try to cross the border.”

Pleitgen closed his live report by offering a statement on the general atmosphere in the region.

“You really feel how things are getting more tense here by the minute,” observed Pleitgen, adding, “certainly you also see that the Russian military is on the ground here, and they certainly at least seem to be in a position to strike at any moment.” if Vladimir Putin decides to order it.”

After months of military escalation and intemperance on the Ukrainian border, Russia is increasing pressure on its former Soviet neighbor, threatening to destabilize Europe and involve the United States.

Russia has been tightening its military grip around Ukraine for the past year, amassing tens of thousands of troops, equipment and artillery at the country’s gates.

The mobilization prompted warnings from US intelligence officials that a Russian invasion could be imminent.

In recent weeks, diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions have not come to a conclusion. On Monday (21), Vladimir Putin recognized the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk, two Ukrainian separatist areas.

The escalation in the years-long conflict between Russia and Ukraine has set off the continent’s biggest security crisis since the Cold War, raising the specter of a dangerous confrontation between Western powers and Moscow.
