Russia has completed the demining of the port of Mariupol and is ready to release foreign ships, said the head of Russia’s National Defense Management Center, Mikhail Mizinchev, in a statement on the website of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
“As a result of a series of actions taken, the Russian Navy has eliminated the risk of landmines in the port waters of Mariupol and measures are being taken to restore the port infrastructure,” Mizinchev said.
The “humanitarian corridor” was to start operating on the morning of May 25th.
“For the safe exit of foreign ships from the port of Mariupol, from 8 in the morning of May 25, 2022, a humanitarian corridor 115 miles long and 2 miles wide is organized in the direction of the Black Sea.”
The strategic city of Mariupol has been under siege by Russian invading forces for almost three months. The attack by the Russian army led to a large-scale humanitarian catastrophe.
Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boychenko said that due to water supply problems, the city was facing a catastrophic infectious disease, which could kill more than 10,000 people by the end of the year.
