Russian missiles kill one person, wound five in Kiev, Ukrainian government says

missiles russians hit a residential building and a kindergarten in downtown Kiev on Sunday, killing one person and wounding five more, officials said, as Moscow intensified its air strikes in Ukraine for a second day.

Firefighters put out a blaze in a badly damaged nine-story residential building in central Shevchenkivskiy district, emergency services said. Debris was strewn over cars parked outside a burning building with a crater in the roof.

“They (rescuers) pulled out a seven-year-old girl. She is alive. Now they are trying to rescue her mother,” said Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

“There are people under the rubble,” Klitschko said on the messaging app Telegram. He added that several people have already been hospitalized.

At another location, about 400 meters away, a Reuters photographer saw a large explosion crater near a playground in a private kindergarten that had broken windows. Some private storage garages in the area were completely destroyed.

The Ministry of Defense of Russia said he used high-precision weapons to attack Ukrainian army training centers in the regions of Chernihiv, Zhytomyr and Lviv, an apparent reference to attacks reported by the Ukraine on Saturday (25th).

There was no immediate comment on Sunday’s attacks in Kiev. Moscow denies attacking civilians.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba asked the countries of the G7 holding a three-day summit in Germany to impose more sanctions on Moscow and supply more heavy weapons.

A Ukrainian Air Force spokesman said between four and six long-range missiles were fired from Russian bombers more than 1,000 kilometers away, in Russia’s southern Astrakhan region overlooking the Caspian Sea.

He said some of the incoming missiles were shot down by Ukrainian air defenses.

Up to four explosions rocked central Kiev early on Sunday. Hours later, there were two more explosions in the city, but there were no immediate signs of damage, suggesting incoming missiles could have been shot down.

Ukraine’s police chief Ihor Klymenko said on national television that five people were injured. Police later confirmed that one person had died.

“The Russians have hit Kiev again. Missiles damaged an apartment building and a kindergarten,” said Andriy Yermak, the president’s head of government.

Explosions were also heard in the central city of Cherkasy, regional governor Oleksandr Skichko said.

The last major attack in Kiev was on June 5, when a railcar repair facility was hit nearby. In late April, a Radio Liberty producer was killed in a strike that hit the building where she lived.

The historic district of Shevchenkivskiy is home to an array of universities, restaurants and art galleries.

Russia abandoned an initial advance on Kiev in the face of fierce resistance reinforced by Western weapons.

Since then, Moscow and its representatives have focused on the south and Donbass an eastern territory made up of Luhansk and its neighbor Donetsk, deploying crushing artillery in some of Europe’s heaviest ground fighting since World War II.
