Dozens of Russian Navy ships are taking part in military exercises in the Baltic, amid growing tensions in the region where NATO military exercises are being conducted simultaneously.
“As part of the exercise, tactical naval teams of the Baltic Fleet have sailed from their bases and have been deployed in predetermined zones,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
About 60 ships and 40 aircraft and helicopters are taking part in the exercises, which are being carried out at sea and on land, at the training centers of the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.
The Russian exercises coincide with NATO’s annual Baltops 22 exercise in the Baltics since Sunday, which will run until June 17.
The intense military activity is part of the high tension that has prevailed between Moscow and the West since the end of February and the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Baltic Sea is a zone of high strategic importance and has become the focus of attention with the formalization of Finland and Sweden’s candidacy for NATO membership.
The accession of the two countries, which is blocked by Turkey, would turn the Baltic into a “NATO lake”, as all coastal countries except Russia are members of the Atlantic Alliance.
As a sign of the importance of the zone, the Chief of the General Staff of the US Armed Forces, General Mark Miley, went to Stockholm last Saturday in the USS Kearsarge helicopter, which is intended for amphibious operations on enemy shores.
