Russian Nobel Peace Prize Winner Will Auction Medal to Help Ukrainian Refugees

The Russian independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta will auction the Nobel Peace Prize medal won by its editor-in-chief, Dmitry Muratov, in aid of Ukrainian refugees.

In a statement posted on the newspaper’s website on Tuesday, Muratov said the crowds of “injured and sick children” in need of “urgent treatment” forced him to offer the prestigious medal.

Muratov, co-founder of Novaya Gazeta, won the Nobel Peace Prize in October 2021 for his tireless defense of freedom of expression in Russia.
The editor-in-chief highlighted in the statement the urgent need for a ceasefire, exchange of prisoners and provision of humanitarian corridors.

Proceeds from the sale of the medal will go to the Foundation for Assistance to Ukrainian Refugees, a non-governmental organization that strives to “provide moral and material support to refugees from Ukraine”.

More than 3.5 million refugees have already left the Eastern European country, according to the latest update from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

Muratov concluded his statement by asking auction houses for a “response that will deliver this prize known throughout the world.”
