Russian official: Russia will respond if Russian citizens are killed in Eastern Ukraine

Russia will “respond” if Russian citizens start being killed anywhere, including in the Donbass region of Ukraine, Russia’s ambassador to the EU, Vladimir Tsizov, said on Tuesday, according to Russia’s Ria Novosti news agency.

“We should not be surprised if we retaliate if Ukrainians start brutally killing Russian citizens anywhere, in Donbass or anywhere else,” Chizhov told the Guardian.

Moscow-backed rebels say the Kiev government is preparing an attack on them, while Ukraine says Russia, which has mobilized more than 100,000 troops near the Ukrainian border, is planning to invade its neighbor, Reuters reports.
