Russian parliament considers allowing people over 40 in the Armed Forces

In a sign of Russia’s urgent need to bolster its war effort in Ukraine, the country’s parliament said on Friday it would consider a bill to allow Russians over 40 and foreigners over 40 to 30 enlist in the Armed Forces.

The Federal Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, said the measure would allow the military to utilize the skills of older professionals.

“For the use of high-precision weapons, the operation of military weapons and equipment, highly professional specialists are needed. Experience shows that they reach this level at 40-45 years old,” he said.

Currently, only Russians aged 18 to 40 and foreigners aged 18 to 30 can sign a first contract with the military.

Russia has suffered major failures and losses of men and equipment in the nearly three-month war with Ukraine, leading Western military analysts to assess that the country urgently needs to mobilize more troops.

The Duma said the planned initiative would also facilitate the recruitment of civilian doctors, engineers and operations and communications specialists.
