Russian police detain 3,500 people in anti-war protests, agency says

Police detained around 3,500 people at anti-war protests in Ukraine in cities across Russia on Sunday, including 1,700 people in Moscow and 750 in St Petersburg, according to TASS news agency, citing the Interior Ministry.

The agency reported that 5,200 people took part in “unauthorized actions” in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other regions of Russia.

“Units of the Russian Interior Ministry, in cooperation with other law enforcement officials, ensured law and order at unauthorized public events that took place in locations in the Russian Federation,” said Irina Volk, a representative of the ministry.

She said 2,500 took part in an rally in Moscow, with 1,700 detained; in St. Petersburg, 750 were taken to the police station among the 1,500 participants. Another 1,200 people reportedly attended protests in other regions of the country, with 1,061 detained.

The agency, citing the representative, said that the detainees were taken to police stations for “investigation”, and that the decision to take them to justice has yet to be defined.

Last week, more than 5,500 people were detained in various anti-war protests across Russia, according to protest monitoring group OVD-Info.
