Russian Post will launch delivery by heavy drones in 4 regions: an experiment so far

The General Director of Russian Post Maxim Akimov told RBC that the company plans to use heavy drones in four regions to deliver parcels. Previously, such an experiment has already been carried out, but now it will be launched on an industrial basis and will last longer.

The launch of the drones, as in the fall of last year, will be carried out in hard-to-reach places where there is poor communication, no roads or difficult weather conditions. Therefore, for the experiment, they will take heavy equipment with a flight range of up to 400 km and a carrying capacity of up to 150 kg. Such drones are capable of operating in places where there is no Internet, only a direct radio channel.

“This is a very necessary and economically justified thing for us. We see in the model that when scaling over a certain number of years, we will recoup our investments in the service of our partner or partners, ”said Maxim Akimov.

The head of Russian Post believes that in the future drones will be able to replace postmen, but today the company has not yet decided whether it is ready to create its own drones or use the products of partners. In addition to UAVs, Russian Post is also testing Yandex robots for delivering parcels. So far, this is also an experiment, after which a decision will be made on the prospects for their use in an urban environment. The company plans to discuss this in more detail at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
