Russian satellite that creates a 3D model of the Earth can also take pictures of the Moon

Today, January 15, representatives of the Progress Rocket and Space Center, which is part of the state corporation Roscosmos, officially announced that the Russian space satellite Aist-2T, which, together with a similar apparatus, will create a three-dimensional model of the Earth , the satellite of our planet, the Moon, can also shoot in the same way – this was reported with reference to the press center of the RCC “Progress” by the information publication “TASS”.

“We have provided for the possibility of using the small spacecraft Aist-2T to shoot the moon,” the press service of the center officially announced.

However, due to certain conditions, the Aist-2T space satellite will not be engaged in shooting the Moon. It’s all about the remoteness of the Moon from a small spacecraft, which is located in Earth’s orbit – the distance from the Earth to the Russian space satellite is 400 kilometers, while the distance between Aist-2T and the Moon is approximately 384,000 kilometers. Accordingly, the Russian satellite simply cannot conduct a stereoscopic survey of the lunar surface due to the huge distance.

“To conduct this type of survey, the spacecraft must be located hundreds of times closer to the moon. For such purposes, including detailed imaging of the Moon, special devices are being created that are located in the orbit of the Moon, ”explained Roscosmos specialists.

At the current moment, the Russian satellite, which will soon be located in Earth’s orbit, will direct its cameras towards our planet – this is necessary for remote sensing of the Earth, but if necessary, to shoot other space bodies, the direction of the cameras of the device will change. As a result, Russian scientists plan to obtain panchromatic and overlapping stereoscopic images of the earth’s surface – this is precisely what the program approved in 2019 is aimed at.
