The advance of Russian troops through strategic regions of Ukraine weakens the country and begins to give Russia greater bargaining power in relation to its neighbor in an eventual negotiation.
This is the analysis of political scientist Vicente Ferraro, a researcher at the Asian Studies Laboratory at the University of São Paulo (USP), who spoke in an interview with CNN this Saturday (5th).
“It’s a strangulation strategy. At the same time as there is an attempt [da Rússia] of besieging the capital Kiev, there is also the siege of other cities of great importance,” said Ferraro.
He mentions, for example, the capture of Kherson last week, a strategic port city in the south of the country, with an outlet to the Black Sea. “The Kherson region facilitates access to Odessa, which is one of the biggest ports in Ukraine,” he said.
“The most important issue is that this is decreasing Ukraine’s chance of having a more emphatic claim to its positions. These advances allow Russia to have greater bargaining power in negotiations and Ukraine to be increasingly vulnerable to having to submit to Russia’s demands and demands,” she added.
