“On social media, Kazakhs opposed the concert of the Russian singer Grigory Leps, who supports the Russian occupation of Ukraine. The company organizing the concert unilaterally decided to cancel it,” announced yesterday, Monday, the regional administration of Almaty through its Instagram page.
At former Soviet republics of central Asiawhich are close to Moscow, but attempt to remain neutral in the war in Ukraine, concerts of Russian artists are regularly cancelled who support the conflict or oppose it.
The hotel complex, where the concert of Grigory Leps was to be held in July in the city of Konagev (Almaty region), announced yesterday, Monday, that broke the contract with the organizer, without further clarification. It was not immediately possible to know who the organizer was.
On his part, Mr Vladimir Uryupin, the artist’s agent, downplayed the significance of this cancellation. “It’s nothing serious, we can skip Kazakhstan. We have supported our country and will continue to do so“, Uryupin told the Russian online newspaper Gazeta.ru.
This decision was taken a few days after Grigory Leps, a supporter of the Russian president Vladimir Putinhe promised to do all he can to help the Moscow army.
“Whatever we can do for our army, we will do from the bottom of our hearts, either to sing or to financially support our soldiers“, he said in mid-June on the sidelines of a forum in St. Petersburg, according to statements carried by local media.
The singer had then supported another artist’s proposal to volunteer one million rubles (approx. 10,800 euros) for the destruction of every Leopard and Leopard 2 tank that Germany gave to Ukraine.
