Russian sources are skeptical about US-proposed ceasefire in Ukraine

Russian sources reacted cautiously on Wednesday to a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire supported by Kiev, stating that any agreement to end the war in Ukraine would have to take into account the Russian advances and address Moscow’s concerns.

The Ukraine invasion of Russia by 2022 left hundreds of thousands of dead and injured, shifted millions of people and triggered the biggest confrontation between Moscow and the West since the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.

US President Donald Trump has reversed the previous policy of Americans about Russia, opening bilateral negotiations with Moscow and suspending military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, stating that she must agree with the terms to end the war.

The United States agreed on Tuesday to resume military aid and intelligence sharing after Kiev announced that he was ready to support a ceasefire proposal.

A senior Russian source told Reuters that President Vladimir Putin would find it difficult to agree with the idea of truce without discussing the terms and obtaining some kind of warranty.

“It’s hard for Putin to agree with this in the current form,” said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation. “He has a strong position because Russia is advancing.”

The source stressed that without guarantees with a ceasefire, the Russian position could quickly weaken and the country could then be guilty by the West for not finishing the war.

Another senior Russian source explained that the proposal seemed, from the perspective of Moscow, a trap because Putin would find it difficult to stop war without some concrete guarantees or promises.

A third Russian source said the scenario was that the United States agreed to resume military aid and intelligence sharing and decorated this action with a ceasefire proposal.

The Russian government has not yet commented.

The Kremlin leader expressed in December: “We do not need a truce, we need a guaranteed long -term peace for the Russian Federation and its citizens. It is a difficult question like ensuring these guarantees. ”
