Russian startup is ready to announce a new Atom electric car: it is being created jointly with KamAZ

Yesterday, January 25, the TASS news outlet, citing the CEO of the Russian company Atom, Igor Povarazdnyuk, reported that the latest Russian electric car called Atom should be officially presented by the end of May this year as part of a full-fledged public presentation. It is worth recalling that the Russian startup Kama is responsible for the development of this vehicle – it was created with the support of Sergey Kogogin, director of KamAZ, as well as the Kama plant and Russian business investors. And if the team’s plans do not change, that in four months the finished prototype of the serial model will be shown in Kazan at the Russia-Islamic World: KazanForum forum.

This is what the Kama-1 prototype looked like in 2020

Also, representatives of the startup said that the upcoming prototype has nothing to do with the Kama-1 layout, which was officially presented to the public in 2020. Which, of course, was expected, because technology in the electric car market has changed a lot in three years. At the same time, the developers of the vehicle are so confident in the success of the new electric car that they plan to send it for export as well. At the moment, Povarazdnyuk told TASS about plans to bring a new electric car to the Chinese and Middle East markets – this is a huge step for the Russian automotive industry, which for a long time worked more on the domestic market.

“We have a plan to become a global technology company, so we are looking at all export markets. It is clear that in the current conditions, the focus is on the markets of the Middle East, China, and so on,” Povarazdnyuk said.

The representative of the startup also noted that the current situation in the country had no effect on the company’s activities.

“We were able to reorient all component partners to friendly countries. And software development has always been quite independent in Russia, given Russian competencies in IT. Therefore, there were no large-scale problems in terms of the development of the car,” added the CEO of Atom.

However, which is quite normal for the electric car market, the presentation in May does not mean the imminent launch of a production car on sale. Experts note that the vehicle on electric power plants will go on sale, most likely, only in 2025. Moreover, the first batch will be implemented for integration into the Moscow transport system – Atoms will work in taxi and car sharing services.
