Russian TASS joins European Alliance of News Agencies

The suspension of the participation of the Russian news agency TASS in the European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) was confirmed today by the general assembly of the Alliance, due to non-observance of the most important “principles” of the association.

At a meeting in Sarajevo, the EANA General Assembly decided “by a large majority to confirm the suspension of the Russian agency TASS in EANA”, said the President of the Alliance, Clemens Pig, in a press conference.

The five-member EANA board of directors, including the CEO of the French agency Fabrice Fries, decided on February 27 to “immediately” suspend the Russian agency’s participation in the alliance, pending the decision of the general assembly.

The decision was made three days after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine due to “new regulations implemented by the Russian government that seriously restrict the freedom of the media.”

“The suspension means that TASS is not allowed to attend (Alliance) conferences and that there is no formal communication between the European News Agencies Alliance and TASS,” Clemens Pig said, adding that the ban was the second option.

According to EANA Secretary General Alexander Ion Giboi, the Russian agency no longer meets the “most important goal” of the alliance, which is to carry out journalistic activities “at the highest possible level”.

“TASS ‘s involvement has been suspended indefinitely … and the conditions for us to be able to return to our community will be extremely difficult,” he said.

In the wake of the start of the Russian-led invasion of Ukraine, the Russian media regulator, Roskomnadzor, has ordered national media to remove from its contents any reference to civilians killed by the Russian army in Ukraine, as well as terms “invasion”, “attack” or “declaration of war”.

He stressed that “only official Russian sources have current and reliable information.”

The two EANA officials expressed their full support for the Alliance in the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform.

“We will continue to help and do what is humane to support Ukrinform, our colleagues and friends there,” said the Alliance Secretary-General.
