Russian troop advance into western Ukraine puts NATO on high alert

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) remains attentive to Russia’s advance towards the west of Ukrainian territory and constantly monitors the movement on Ukraine’s border with other countries.

Since Thursday (10), NATO radars have detected 20 Russian fighter jets departing Belarus towards Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. This dynamic was the most intense since the beginning of the war.

The city of Lviv, in the west of the country, is also apprehensive about the latest Russian attacks. About 100 kilometers from the Polish border, Lviv has been an important route for those looking to flee the conflict and so far has not been attacked by Russia. But the latest bombings in nearby cities are starting to change the routine in the city.

The sirens indicating the possibility of a missile in the region rang again in the city of Lviv in the early hours of this Friday (11). As soon as the alarm sounded, many people sought shelter, like in a church catacomb.

The director of the museum of a cathedral in Lviv reveals that about 100 people took refuge there to protect themselves from possible bombings.

“I think we can expect an attack tonight. It’s scary. What scares me the most is an attack on the train station. A lot of people are there, a lot of refugees, says Maxym Kondrashov, who is a military instructor in territorial defense.

The imminence of a bombing mobilized the residents of Lviv. The sculptures of a church in the city were covered with old cloths and mattresses so that the local historical heritage is not destroyed in the event of an attack.

Extension of the offensive

According to Ukrainian authorities, this Friday (11), Russian troops hit the city of Lutsk, one of the main cities in the country, which is located in the northwest of the country and is just 112 kilometers from the border with Poland. “Substantial damage” was reported to Lutsk airport.

Also in northwest Ukraine, the governor of the Volyn region said four missiles were fired from a Russian bomber and that two people were killed.

The Ivano-Frankivsk military airfield in western Ukraine was also hit by missiles during this Friday.

On the opposite side of the country, in the southeast, a missile attack on the outskirts of Dnipro killed a civilian and damaged an elementary school building, apartment buildings and a shoe factory.

There were also night air strikes in the Brovary district east of Kiev and a missile attack on the town of Baryshivka, about 72 kilometers east of the capital.

A football stadium and library in Chernihiv, a city in northern Ukraine, were seriously damaged in an airstrike.

The cities of Kiev, Kharkhiv, Mariupol, Mykolaiv and Sumy continue to suffer from Russian attacks and are under pressure.

There is mounting evidence that the eastern Ukrainian city of Volnovakha has fallen to Russian forces and their allies in the self-declared People’s Republic of Donetsk. The city of Kherson also appears to have been dominated by the Russians, according to US defense intelligence.

Train

Last Thursday (10), satellite images had indicated that the approximately 60 km long convoy heading towards Kiev had dispersed.

This Friday, however, the available information shows that the convoy is regrouping.
