Russian-Ukrainian couple flees Kiev for five days for Hungary

Russian software engineer Mikhail Liublin and his Ukrainian girlfriend traveled by train and bus for five days to reach Hungary after leaving Kiev, hearing bombs exploding on the way and sometimes thinking they wouldn’t make it.

As they waited in the ticket line to catch a train to Budapest from the Zahony border, the young couple kissed happily.

“Unlike everyone else here, I’m from Russia. I lived in Ukraine for about a year,” Liublin said.

“It’s crazy. And Russia will pay for it, for many, many years, and Putin must be put on trial,” he added, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Putin ordered a special military operation last Thursday in a bid to disarm Ukraine, capture the “neo-Nazis” he says rule the country and crush his hopes of closer ties with the West.

Several days after the invasion that provoked huge international sanctions, the Russian military tried to surround and control Ukrainian cities with intensified bombings on Wednesday (2).

Liublin said he and his girlfriend – refusing to give her name – found it almost unbelievable that they had finally finished the long journey to Hungary, as almost every day there was bombing or shooting.

“It will be very difficult now, but I hope it works out and I will cross my fingers that Ukraine stands firm, and goodness and truth win,” said the young man with a huge smile.

Shortly after, the couple boarded the train for the Hungarian capital.
