According to information from two European officials, Russian forces would be feeling “self-imposed” pressure to achieve some kind of victory over Ukraine by May 9. In the opinion of Professor of History of International Relations Andrew Patrick Traumann, in an interview with CNN, it is very unlikely that this deadline will be met.
“That for me is absolutely unfeasible. We’re seeing a war of narratives about whether or not to attack civilians and all that. I think it is absolutely unfeasible that in one month there will be a definitive victory”, said the professor.
Despite this, the expert points out that Russia has not used its full military potential. According to him, it is possible that mass aerial bombings will become the main strategy of Vladimir Putin’s troops. “We fear that if this is the new strategy, we will have an even higher number of civilian deaths,” he said.
In recent days, Russia has shown a change of strategy, reducing the offensive in the regions close to the capital Kiev, mainly. According to a European official, only a quarter of Russian forces are currently operating in Ukraine.
Still, the clashes continue to generate significant losses. On Friday, an attack on a train station in the east of the country left at least 50 dead.
“Russia will not stop until there is, on paper, that Ukraine will not join NATO. The rest is negotiable, including Zelensky’s permanence in power. But the NATO question, for Russia, is an existential question. They will not allow NATO to place missiles there aimed at Russia,” Traumann explained.
